  • cramps.

  • I am totally down for a spider-demic!

  • The trump administration gave multibillion and trillion dollar companies such as Microsoft, Amazon, Walmart, etc. $2,3,000,000,000,000.00 dollars in tax cuts in December 2017 where these companies paid $0 in federal taxes: Money that could have gone to Education, Healthcare and Long Term care, etc. Ravi Peiris M.D.

  • I like how at 17:01 it shows a projection of the video's performance, compared to now, which has a similar view total, way less dislikes!

    • someone had died there and they most definitely shouldnt have been able to get there.

  • It doesn't help that you have insurance companies like Humana who scam the elderly out of their Medicare and replace it with managed care that when they actually need rehab to go home they cannot use at all. It is one of the most fucked up things about LTC. Insurance companies preying on the naïve conning them into thinking they are saving money without giving up anything, but actually replacing their Medicare coverage with nothing.

  • I know someone who was fired from a nursing home for smashing a dirty diaper in a patients face and then claimed she had a seizure and was able to get a job at a different location.

  • even is American health care.

  • Better Call Saul

  • When John said "put your phone down", I literally had a phone in my hand. As I looked Mr. Oliver in the eyes, he dead-ass said "that plate fucks". Crazy 4th wall man....

    • I know of at least one other situation where I spend hours in my bed screaming in pain, there's just a bit more movement involved lol

  • Stephanie Costa might've been the inspiration for Netfilx's "I care a lot"

  • I do worry, though, how a pivot to community based care will effect the growing number of people basically having to structure their entire lives around elderly parents to the detriment of their own health and well-being. I'm disabled myself, mentally ill and arthritic, and I'm being pushed to break my body down taking care of abusive parents who still treat me like shit to this day. I can't send them to a home or an ALF for all the reasons listed, but frankly being paid to take care of them wouldn't make having to do it go down any easier.

    • Well, for most people they can just choose not to, because weirdly enough, children are not slaves, and they have zero obligation to care for their parents.

  • that theory.

  • Health care in LTC's is just as bad in canada since they started privatizing it. It's all about the money.

  • Nursing homes are getting the short of the stick. Big business call the shots causing under paid and under staffed. I should know, I live in one.

  • my grandfather was in a nursing home in Mass and he has dementia. We got a call saying he was dropped off at a hospital and that we needed to find him a new home. We live in canada and can not go there. They gave no notice and just dropped him off in a van. the hospital is the one who called us. They threw him out because he threw a teddy bear at a nurse. Edit: This is actively happening. We got the call yesterday.

    • you need to contact him on WhatsApp now

    • +=2=3=4=8=0=7=0=7=6=8=9=9=2...

    • Don't give up on life and the universe I know of a great man who helped you me fix my broken hear beat relationship and everything was restored to pormal in days without delay

  • Frözen to Death on Christmas Day is a strong 8 to a light 9. One of the better albums to come out this year

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you for shining a spotlight on for-profit memory care!!!!

  • This wouldn't be a problem if we didn't live in car-dependant cities

  • The moment John said the reason for the pond was horrifying, i felt sick. I immediately knew because of all the other shit John has talked about with places like this, that someone had died there and they most definitely shouldnt have been able to get there.

  • When John said "it's spiders" i yelled "fuck you John" and then remembered im listening to this with headphones.

  • The amount of things I have learned from this show are quite impressive.

  • We had to pull $10,000 from my wifes 401k to hire an Elder Care lawyer. Her father was in one of the better ones and sadly that saying much. This was to handle the medicaid part which long term insurance said we had to obtain and they would cover the rest. Medicare was looking to cover up to 7500 a month, where the long term insurance would cover the 2500 rest. Then covid hit and that claimed him. 'Murica. I have a feeling they sped up some older folks passing to clear beds because they had a waiting list. Also, many states say places can not kick out residents unless they have a place to go to take care of them, but you can be responsible for expenses.

  • Please do a show on Steven Donziger, at best before his case on May 10th. Please?

  • I know of at least one other situation where I spend hours in my bed screaming in pain, there's just a bit more movement involved lol

    • would cost to fix the said problem.

  • I mean....if you've gotta tell people not to harass the alligators.....just don't bother, they're better off harassing them.

  • "enumerating the systemic problems of capitalism without directly naming it"

  • I for one would to like to welcome our new arachnid overlords!

  • ...TV (all programs, films, TV series, all but really all), the news and now the web, ISchats, facebook etc. are brainwashing you. Turn everything off and take your life back, media your time is up. Whoever is in charge of the media will be punished.. Follow me

  • Biden is a fucking moron. Stop praising him.

  • Okay... not a big Oliver fan - particularly the shoe-horned jokes that fall flat through such disturbing topics, but that image of an elderly Oliver triggered a genuine belly laugh.

  • I volunteered at a nursing home (with a lot of disabled residents) for a bit during middle school, and I want to cry imagining any of the residents in bad care. Many of them often got confused and had a few issues, but they were lovely people and deserve to live in a good environment that can cater to their needs. The staff should also be payed lots of money since while I don't regret working there, it could be a bit mentally tolling and I can't imagine doing the more difficult parts of the job EVERY DAY, especially since some of the residents would get into fights. Generally, nursing homes deserve better, both for the workers and the residents.

  • I just quit working at an assisted living facility. Management refused to do anything when a coworker sexually harassed another female coworker. They didn't care about the residents or employees, just money.

  • Long term care facilities shouldn't be privately run, it's as simple as that.

  • For profit models are always going to be so anathemic to care outcomes that I will never be a libertarian.

  • I love Living in Denmark.

  • Yeah sounds like the USA " oh we can get more money from this guy, sorry Fred, its on the street for you we can make more money" The Capitalist system as work. The whole of america id so demented, and crule. All you God fearing people should, cause your country should be burned to ash by the father.

    • That’s not how things are or should be solved.

  • yeah this system needed to be reworked since the 1980s sadly this isn't a new problem just covid put it in the light then put a fire under administration.

  • i love how canada called in the army for help for the first 2 months of the pandemic then pushed the problem under the rug shortly afterwards because of how much money it would cost to fix the said problem.

    • yeah in ontario it was 28 residents for every worker in a 8 hour shift something like 20 minutes a person a day.

  • What I remember from this segment is that John did not age well

  • American hypercapitalism at its best.

  • GREYS SEASON 3 THROWBACK DAMN

  • Hey now! Some of my best friends are spiders. They eat a lot of bugs that are pests to humans. What do we do to the spiders in the future that they no longer want to be silent helpers of humanity?

  • This guy has the brains of that object my dog leaves in the backyard every morning, I don't call them turds I call them Ollies...lol

    • Wow. You sure roasted him. I’m sure that’s considered an epic insult in your break room at Walmart.

  • My mom is 87 she had Covid she’s been isolated since the start of Covid she screams for help because she can’t find the nurses button I call every day she doesn’t answer the phone anymore she says the phones out of reach so I have to call the nurses desk that can take an hour. She tells me she’s in pain and I have to call the manager and then they finally do x-rays figure out it’s another UTI probably had like 20 in the last year, I FaceTimed her one day and her chest was sticking out she look like Rigamortus her body was all stiff and she started yelling at me like she was being held captive of course I called the manager come to find out they weren’t giving her any pain medicine she had told the doctor she wasn’t in any pain and they had it to where she had to ask for it it wasn’t just given to her so I got that taken care of it’s continuous so I’m always having to call to help. She said sometimes they change her and sometimes they just let her sit in it it’s a hit or miss she says she says the lady next to her she must have money because she always gets people over there looking at her she’s in a little 5 x 7 area with a curtain drawn so she can’t see anything three walls and the half the time she can’t remember how to turn on the TV so she doesn’t think she has TV. She said she’s been having very vivid dreams that she’s walking she can’t walk so she’s trying to Scooch down out of the bed I told management that and she ended up falling I hate nursing home she even told me before she went into the nursing home if she wanted me to kill her of course I was like no mom I can’t do that I’m gonna go to jail I got more stories than that will just leave it here they’re terrible places!

  • If the cost is 100k per year and the staff is getting 30k, each resident should have their own personal nurse.

  • I’ve worked in elder care in Canada. It is just as bad. Public not-for-profit facilities are just as bad. People are just dumped off by their families and there isn’t enough staff. Our regulations are super lax. IMO families need to be caring for their loved ones as long as possible, and then go to hospice where there is larger staffing and regulation. Peoples don’t care enough about the elderly.

  • Btw this Stephanie Costa has that creepy little girl voice. Clearly a lot of weird stuff happening with her. lol

  • It should be a law that it is required to have a nursing staff of four to six people per twenty residents at a long term facility at all times.

  • The owners keep most of the money for themselves, just like all those greedy corporate executives out there. Why? Because they can, and there's no rules against it. It's brutal and awful and will never change.

  • her caretaker as well as her baby girl.💔 😇💜

  • Why I offered to offer taking care of my grandparents when I came home to stay for a bit, so they could spend time with the great grand kids... The other issue is how little some people of that older generation lack respect for the younger generation, and still want to act like they are the parents... not the great grandparents... I say this from the perspective of a mother; who is constantly told by them as they are glued to the news how changing anything with the problems in the world is impossible, and any work done in the community is a waste of my time... Old people can be extremly difficult to care for sometimes.

    • My other grandmother however, was a saint with a heart of gold. She was poor but was surrounded by family and a community who loved her in her final days. That to me now feels like a special treasure... Love matters so much.

  • The reason people walk off is while the doors have alarms, they are NEVER LOCKED which always baffled me. As someone who worked in a few care homes, both high class and ghetto, you always get a MINIMUM of 10 patients and usually at least half if not all are incontinent and a good portion are total care, meaning you need a minimum of 2 workers to perform and care. I worked in one care home on a unit of 31 patients, only 3 were cognitive. Every one was incontinent and at least 10 were feeders. Shifts there were 12hrs and we were always understaffed. This was last May too btw so covid was just starting. I worked the recovery hall one shift with about 20 patients by myself for 13hrs. I stayed an extra 2hr to help the night aide cause she was gonna be by herself. And very few care homes have memory units. Even the one that had a nice one, bumped a dementia patient to a main hall cause of medicare/Medicaid BS and that hall was a heavy hall, it had 5 total care patients alone and never had less than 14 patients on the hall. Because they count how many beds are full/available not how much care a patient will need. I am so glad I work at a hospital now because at least my patients get better and go home.

    • @bouytt guyt one guy who owned a bunch across a couple states was forcing people to GO BACK TO WORK AFTER TESTING POSITIVE FOR COVID!

    • UNNECESSARY so the banks got us, Again.) Equity Owned nursing homes have as high a death rate as 'covid.' Also, it saves 90% of Medicare to simply keep people Home.

  • Anybody arbitrarily capping a list at 88 makes me twitchy. I'm 90% sure its coincidence, but the use of the number 88 is a known neo-Nazi code (the eight letter of the alphabet is H, so 88 is code for "Heil Hitler").

  • Spiders! Thanks for the nightmares lol

  • Makes an early death not sound so bad

  • pray that I die long before I need one of these places.

  • When my great grandmother went to a life care center, she begged me to come see her every day. She said, "They treat you better when they know you've got family."

  • To be fair to most of these places, old people die...like all the time...would you remembered if you just went in your sleep? OR...eaten by a gator?! Crazy shits gonna happen no matter how well staffed and well trained everyone is...

  • I worked as an RN in Long Term Care for about 3 years. I wouldn’t put my dog in the facility I worked at, we were so short staffed people did not get looked after as they should. 🇨🇦I’m hoping this pandemic has shown how badly our seniors are cared for and big changes come for the most vulnerable in our society. 🤞 I would go home feeling terrible and that is why I changed jobs. When I worked in the ER, people would drop off their family members because they couldn’t care for them at home anymore and the wait list to get into LTC was so long. That person would get sent to our Acute care floor and wait there until a LTC bed became available. This person would pay the hospital as if they were in LTC. The whole system needs to be over hauled and we need more LTC beds and more trained staff who will get paid better. It’s a nightmare considering we have the boomers getting to the age of needing LTC.

    • place those bastards in the worst care facilities!

  • This is what capitalism looks like. And it has seeped into every fiber of American fabric. It's basically the moral for every LWT episode.

  • How Moronic do you have to be to not understand that For PROFIT Health CARE is the definition of an OxyMoron?

  • Hot take: this show is better without an audience EDIT: I’m also located in Ohio, so I hope this doesn’t disqualify me

  • I'm an only child of a woman who also has 3 sisters who never had kids, despite them all marrying even twice 1/2 of the time. I often worry for them and also for myself if I think too far into the future , and also alzheimers is an issue genetically and my grandma and great grandma suffered from it when I was younger. It is sort of a mindfuck especially with an exponentially shrinking family .

  • I'm a hospice social worker. This is the center of my job. It's hell

  • In terms of Long Term Care, things have gotten really bad in Canada. Specifically in Ontario. It’s terrible out here.. But I agree, that plate F U C K S

  • So much useful info in every episode but just because John oliver can't resist making a vulgar joke people can't share it with family and friends or even recommend it. #OpportunityLost

  • DreyHils on telegram is a real vendor I can’t believe my eyes that man too real goat on this he on telegram he sell credit card with high balance.

  • Taxpayers continue to pay the costs of long term care nursing homes via Disability claims: staff in these 'homes' have some of the highest injury rates in the nation. Lifting passive weight all day, or sometimes combative people, does a lot of damage to a person's body and mind. Also, sexual assaults on the job are common and legal: there's no reporting system for assaults of workers, so when clients attack us, they are not dealt with then sent to other homes where they attack clients (Then it's a problem.)

  • I've written everyone in govt. about high death rate in long term care since 2010: no one cared. Also wrote MSM outlets for a decade: no one cared. They've ALWAYS DIED IN HIGH NUMBERS IN LONG TERM CARE & I've heard/seen people calling police to 'get help' often, which I've done a few times myself, but this field is headed by corrupt officials who Don't Care. They want the poor to die and end up with their assets & SSI: the expected life span of usa citizens is going down. The ARTIFICALLY high death rate in nursing homes that overuse psychotropic drugs so they can hire skeleton crew was used to justify largest bank bailout since 2008 (which I just learned WAS COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY so the banks got us, Again.) Equity Owned nursing homes have as high a death rate as 'covid.' Also, it saves 90% of Medicare to simply keep people Home. Oregon, as many other states, prefers to destroy the Stay at Home program and get rid of workers (who make about $4/hr. & have less than 1 day off a month) in favor of federally funded nursing homes (more money for their state budgets & they can get rid of the elderly poor quicker that way.)

  • John Oliver, I watch your show quite frequently. I even re-watch them. Most likely because I'm clinically insane. (Jokes) As I have watched your show throughout the years, I have witnessed an evolution. Not of you but our society. Your comical dialogue on the human condition is not only detailed but very enjoyable. With that being said, I am distraught with the course the human race is plummeting. I do not need to explain to you what I am referring to, as you report on these subjects every Sunday your show is on. You do a very good job of informing us of what is actually happening as well as what we can do as individuals to NOT perpetuate the shit that is being peddled in this world by disingenuous greedy people. I am wanting to ask you this. What is it going to take for the human race to stop being such raging dickbags? When will the collective good out shine the shit show that are racist, greedy or just evil people. Is it a perception issue? Am I just not seeing the good anymore? Now, I know those are some deep questions, but I feel like you could do it justice. You have answered a lot tougher questions. I know this will probably fall into the cracks of the internet. But I would like to know what you think it will take for the human race to actually move forward in a better manner than we have been able to muster so far.

  • That is one old Grey's Anatomy joke...

  • My girlfriend worked for Brookdale for a little over a year and their service is disgusting at least in east Tennessee.

  • Oh God, I’m never putting my mom in a long care home, she’s gonna live in my house till she dies.

  • The US claims to be so great, great nations don't treat their elders this way! It's disgusting! I would rather be dead than live in one of those facilities. My family will care for our parents. It's awful how we treat those people who are responsible for us being here! Honestly I don't get it at all. Screw every politician who would vote against their care and place those bastards in the worst care facilities!

  • You guys should definetly check the story on the Nursing Home in Crete, Greece. Where they were killing off residents. The things that came to life the past few days are HORRIFIC

  • Appropriate Bjork link: ischats.info/fun/acipZmiHo3SGgKY/v-deo

  • John, I know this comment fall on feaf ears, but if you need another hair trial, dye it pink. It will work.

  • During the pandemic the Canadian government just increased wages for health care aids by $4 an hour permanently!

  • This time you've gone too far .... Velveta is delicious

  • 10:00

  • Good on you for raising awareness.

  • The haircut joke and the crunch wrap supreme joke both had me rolling. 😄 EDIT: Hadn't finished the video yet, and the abandoned White Castle joke got me too. 😆

  • anymore right now. I can't believe that 1.1k people could dislike this. WTF is wrong with them?

  • Speaking from experience, residential care homes are a better alternative. They are actually houses that are equipped for elderly with nursing staff available 24 hours.

  • Holy crap am I glad I'm in Canada. My mother is in an apartment complex that offers daily care and is very happy and content. It might happen here but I've not heard of at this level and I feel it is profit driven. Fortunately when you allow some socialist policy it helps remove some of the greed based issues.

  • 14:01 "Uncredited extra from an entourage party scene " 😂

    • 1:32 Uhm... I'm watching this on my phone...

  • Pay the workers more! Mandate that. My sisters final 4 years were in a nursing home. Train and pay these ppl. It kills me to remember how often she called me because noone was answering the button.

  • I hope JO sticks to this NO AUDIENCE format. Spiders or not.

  • Why can cops and nursing homes execute/murder people, yet neither lose their positions of power (job and/or corporate charter)? It seems as if the cops are murdering people consistently with the consent, if not encouragement of the government - as are nursing homes. How about trying democracy and "the rule of law" (you know, the one where we all have to obey the same laws - no "get out of jail free" cards).

  • Hammer, shovel, backyard. Use them. Census data is publicly available - we KNOW how many "old people" there are and there will be. The "powers that be" invested heavily in nursing homes and funeral parlors back in the 1980s and 1990s. In the words of Edward Kaiser - the "father of HMOs"--- "you see, the less care we deliver, the more money we make". (FYI - Richard Nixon's response was, "I like that".)

  • "Look at me.... that plate FUCKS."

  • Listen to his voice, there’s no humour in it only anger.

  • Used to work those jobs. And I have a niece doing that currently. No matter how lovely those places are, you still are under their regulations. When you get up to when you sleep.frankly I want a pill when I'm too old to be independent.

  • Just had a visit with my Grandma yesterday, who is likely going to need to move in with my mom due to her age. My stomach was churning as I watched this, imagining how if my mom and her weren't close that she could've wound up in a horrible place like in this video. My heart aches for all the seniors who have to live through this.

  • Another reason why the health system in the USA is horribly backwards compared to any other G7 nation. The U.S. System is that bad, the health care in the 12th century was better....

  • I'm sure somebody already posted this, but as an Ohioan his joke was funny.

  • I love it, Thats the new American slogan, Garbage in Garbage out

  • why don't we make euthanasia widely available, whether the person is terminal or not? I want to die with dignity when I want to die. I don't see why I shouldn't be allowed to, as an adult.
