I asked an AI for video ideas, and they were actually good

Birt 22 feb 2021
I didn't expect this to work so well. • Includes text generated by OpenAI's GPT-3 at my request: openai.com • Art by Chris Quay: www.chrisquay.com/ • Got an idea for a video? www.tomscott.com/contact/
Filmed safely: www.tomscott.com/safe/
OpenAI had no control or sign-off on this video, although I agreed to abide by their ethical guidelines and social media policy.
Thanks to Eddie the corgi's owner for introducing me to the folks at OpenAI: eddie_corg

  • I should clarify that by "out of ideas", I mean that I've only got enough to last me until the end of March, or maybe the middle of April if lockdown eases. The way I work, that's close enough that I start to get worried.

    • Your channel can be summed up as “exploring the margins of an advanced society”

    • How about 'The Secret Tunnels of Gilmerton Cove'?

    • Ideas? You should have asked 🙂 How about 'The British motorway and its white squares'? Not the most interesting but I'm curious af as to what those white squares in the middle of the lanes are used for on UK motorways.

    • Make a new Channel 😊 .

    • When lockdown is over and you can travel you could make a video about the Gunpowder Factory of Barcarena. This is not me just wanting Tom to come here to Portugal, i just think it has an interesting story.

  • I would love to watch an episode on "The British road that is also a boat".

  • So, what you're saying is you need to create a Welcome to Night Vale / Scarfolk City Council style channel in which you make those kinds of videos?

  • We should merge OpenAI's GPT-3 with AI-Generated-Tom-Scott and create a second channel called "Som Tcott"

  • You said that there was a video title for a video you had already made, but not realised. What you should do is you should ask it to generate a script and see how close it gets to yours

  • Yes! @Tom Please consider coming here to Dundee to do a video on the RRS Discovery after lockdown! There's also the HMS Unicorn here too, the oldest wooden British warship and one of the six oldest ships in the world!

  • There is a hill that refused to be a hill and is now enjoying life as a mountain

  • Oh dear; this AI is a _the earth is flat_ kinda conspiracy theorist's wet dream.

  • Jeremy Clarkson's Lottery of Death is just taking a ride with Richard Hammond.

  • So you asked a computer but not your subscribers

  • What if the invisible village WAS the Russian utopia?

  • The scp creator ai

  • "The British Road That Is Also A Boat" with slight variation could be any of a number of floating bridges near me here in Seattle, WA, USA. We like to joke that Lake Washington has two bridges over the water, and two under the water, since both the I90 and SR 520 floating bridges have both sank. The stories of these bridges and their disasters seem like they'd be right up your alley.

  • Make a Video on the Police, like how they started in the UK like you did with the fire fighters?

  • "the beach where you can hear the sea" im dead this is genius call albert einstein he'd be amazed

  • Wigan pier is in Wigan, Lancashire. Nowhere near the Midlands

  • 'The strange light that floats over oxfordshire' me: looks outside some random alien in a UFO:

  • And that's how my friends, Skynet was created

  • It's weird how much those titles sound like a Tom Scott video. Even if they're not true or plausible.

  • very glad to know that lofthouse is still there

  • The closest word I could find was Anemoia, which means “A Nostalgia for a time you never knew”. Which is something you could make a video on, weird words, their meaning and describing how it feels But, I think we can safely create a new word for how your feeling Hingdistica: Felling Nostalgia for something that never happened, or ever could happen

  • The AI did a really good job.

  • New spiderman title has been confirmed!

  • This video was an AI recommendation.

  • oh wow, watson on jeopardy really was 10 years ago

  • Could you do an episode on the Palmerstone Forts in the Solent near Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight once lockdown has lifted? There’s one where I live (Fort Gilkicker in Gosport) and has very interesting history as defences against the French. There are a few built into the Solent seabed in the middle of the channel during the Victorian era, could be a cool topic for an Amazing Places episode!

  • Wigan is the west midlands?!

  • Jeremy Clarkson’s lottery of death. Absolutely based.

  • “Jeremy Clarkson’s Lottery of Death” is genuinely the most unexpected and funniest thing I’ve heard in a while

  • What a fascinating video. Tom is truely one of the best filmmakers on the internet.

  • Genius. My name is Riley and I want to find a new world.

  • 5:21 wtf i’ve already heard that somewhere

  • That last fictional one is just talking about Hull.

  • "My job would be a lot easier". I think you are wrong here, cause at that point your job will cease to exist. Cause then I can binge a never ending stream of synthetic Tom Scott-videos.

  • A.M. Allied Mastercomputer

  • "Two drums and a cymbal falls off a cliff that refuses to be a cliff" There, kept you going for one more week.

  • Phew, good thing lofthouse is still there

  • You should tell the story about how three Cornish speaking Cornish men saved the English language from extinction. Which was one of histories saddest ironies, as it was this act that then destroyed our own Cornish language! Or how about how a group of Seven Cornish fishermen who in 1854 sailed to Australia in their small Cornish (fishing) Lugger, to try and find their fortune in Australia's gold rush. The name of the Lugger was "Mystery" and it took them two months! When they arrived in the harbour the harbour master didn't even realise they weren't local nor their lugger, until they approached him.

  • The green death is an amazing Jon Pertwee story that explores the side effects of chemical waste disposal and people protesting against the awful waste disposal

  • Human moral is often disconnected from logick, it give us panic so we opt in to not develop some things for we think some can use it for things we do not like, a bit like robots in the future may be seen as humans and therefore are protected by human rights and laws, just for we was afraid what kind of sex robots may be built if we can make them look like humans. That is the reason we will never see human like robots sold to the public, we will make laws to stop some technologies just for it is to similar to humans, we will never see full AI made public, those are things that will stay in a lab and then be forgotten, but it also show what we fear most is the humanity itself, so maybe a future with only AI and robots are better than a future with humans due to moral.

  • If you do release videos that you started after GPT-3 recommended them, can you please mention so in the video or description? I think that'd be really neat. (not necessarily ones like the "unreleased video that it corrected predicted", though I'm curious what that one was too)

  • "the lost village of lofthouse that is now invisible" sounds amazing

  • I doubt this AI 's efforts are significantly better quality than the results from a free online guild name generator? At least so far as snappy titles goes?

  • Now is this advertisement or genuine personal experience

  • Tom: "I think I'll make a video about a cliff." The cliff: "Well you better go find one then.We don't have such things here."

  • that's the work of a cartoonist, not an animator, but they might be an animator as well.

  • Was the Video UK Colonising The Moon? That’s what the Thumbnail looks like

  • Wigan (and Wigan Pier) are nowhere near the Midlands, they're less than 20 miles away from Manchester. And the pier is not derelict either.

  • Here's a potential title from this video (2:55) that'll get immediate attention from some of us Northerners..."Who said Wigan Pier is in the West Midlands?". Better tell those famous Midlands cities - Liverpool, Manchester and Sheffield.

  • I feel like the beach scene and the scene where tom is reading the ai generated script have a deepfake of tom's face on tom's face

  • @4:05 Harbour Air! I used to work for them.

  • It hit the end of that curve already (faster than feminism hit "the wall") when its limit ended up being that all generated titles can only sound like Creepy-Pasta. You'll know the next curve is over when it can speak them realisticaly instead of text but the catch this time is that the voice is always sarcastic.

  • 2:07 I can't believe you didn't save that for its own video.

  • Please, generate a text for "a cliff that refuses to be a cliff".

  • o̶p̶e̶n̶-AI, formerly "open", now closed behind a paywall specifically a paywall where you pay for using GPT-3 on their servers thus being very, very expensive. It's not that GPT-3 is possibly dangerous nor "too large" (data-wise), it's that "Open-AI" want to keep making a lot of money all while dictating what GPT-3 can be used for, (though shared with Microsoft in an exclusivity deal). o̶p̶e̶n̶-AI.

  • Some time when this pandemic is over, you could do one on the “Mojave Megaphone”. It’s an object in the middle of the Mojave Desert, and nobody knows what it is, how it got there, who put it there, why it was put there, or even when it was put there.

  • That's kinda scary. In the future we could have story's and movie plots being made by AI

  • "The Green Death And The Industrial Revolution" is a story actually. At the time around the industrial revolution technical advancements made it possible to live in bright homes, so there was a new need for bright colored walls, and one of the favorite colors of the wallpapers was the bright green created by arsenic based paint. (It also became popular as a dress color.) Huge amount of people died for decades before arsenic-free green paints became widespread.

  • Hold on a sec ... are any kids watching this and thinking "Hey can the AI do my homework for me?"

  • I'd love to see a Tom Scott AI channel where fictional stories like this get covered.

  • That's Madame Blavatsky not 'Baroness Helena Von Haan'.

  • 05:40 Why would you ask an AI computer to do something starting with "please"? Will it recognizes the politeness and try harder?

  • the "a cliff the refuses to be a cliff" sounds like a title for daily does of internet

  • Is that a burial mound in the background?

  • @tom scott "nostalgia for a thing that never existed , that never could have existed" - we already have that its called "right wing social policy"

  • That sounds kind of scarry to me. A time in wich you don't know if what you see and hear was created by a human or by an AI.

  • The Aberfan disaster sounds interesting

  • this seems like an scp

  • The ideas that can't be real are just SCP ideas

  • 07:48 - I hope not redundant :o

  • Tom, i really love your scifi-talks like "privacy's dead whats next" etc maybe you can actually make some of those inspired by GPT 3 ideas?

  • 7:14 - evidence of Tom summoning a passing car for emphasis

  • BRILLIANT, as always

  • I really wish we got the Jeremy Clarkson Lottery Of Death script.

  • i think there was a GCSE English language paper 2 on that mining land slip, quite an interesting mock

  • "the green death and the industrial revolution" sounds more like an bootleg ted kaczynski manifesto

  • “Nostalgia for things that never existed” Not sure if this has already been said, but how about “Fauxstalgia”?

  • Tom actually reads the terms and conditions pass it on

  • This is kinda scary

  • Good content. _Thats it_

  • Tom: Doesn't have a video idea Also Tom: Makes a video about not having any video ideas

  • "Kirby's Dream" (Land). Gamers knows what you did AI, you're not on our level yet.

    • Oh my God I would love to see a video titled ‘a cliff that refuses to be a cliff’

  • What about doing more of those sci-fi videos you did a while back? Like the one about the content A.I. that 'rules' the world or the citizen spy service. They were really good.

  • The cliff that refuses to be a cliff kinda sounds like my existential dread in a clickbaity title

  • This channel is just an endless source of genius. Keep it coming!

  • Could you ask for nuke password to this AI (/s) Because it was trained on the web, it might memorize credential data as well

  • Land called Kirby's dream? Hmmmm one could say Kirby's dream land?

  • I wonder what happens when there's more and more AI content and someone tries to train a new AI model, but on data including those previously generated by the other AI. How would they filter that? You know, for example this video couldn't be used to train an AI, because it already contains some AI content...

  • You should really do a video about the "Jeddah tower" (obviously not right now since its lockdown)

  • Your green screen for the background in every video is surprisingly good. I like how your animator made it animated to make it look real and how your wearing different clothing depending on the environment.

  • It is a fun and interesting video, but is scary to think of. Imagine if somebody weaponise this technology, use it to spark a war or some sort, or worse, cause chaos without someone telling it to do so. What if it is already happening today?

  • singularity when

  • Can't wait to see a movie written by an AI

  • 2020s kids homework bout to get a whole lot easier

  • They made the island with the gravity defying mountain in final fantasy

  • Salvation is a completely free gift. Jesus Christ died for our past, present and future sins on the cross, was buried and rose again on the third day and because of this you are saved and not because of anything good you’ve done. Believing is enough.❤️

  • Why we associate vacuum cleaners as Hoovers and why you can’t associate hook and loop fasteners as Velcro.

  • Oh my God I would love to see a video titled ‘a cliff that refuses to be a cliff’

  • Combine the GPT-3 scriptwriter with the AI Tom Scott from 'Trying To Create an AI Tom Scott' to create a completely automated Tom Scott which comes up with video ideas, writes a script, and then produces the video and publishes it.
