Taking The Emergency Exit From A Wind Turbine

Birt 3 maí 2021
Wind turbines have emergency exits, but they might not be for the reason you think. • Thanks to Octopus Energy: octopus.energy/octopus-fan-club/ (This video isn't sponsored, but obviously they did let me go up their wind turbine.)

  • I couldn't find a way to fit this into the video, but rather wonderfully, this turbine is called Octopus Energy's "#1 Fan". Thanks to all the team there, and the rope access team at EWT. This wasn't sponsored, and Octopus had no control over the final video, but obviously they did let me go up their conveniently-branded wind turbine in an effort to boost their brand. (If any other companies would like to show me around their conveniently-branded spectacular facilities, they should definitely get in touch...!)

    • Asoo

    • Why can i only see half of your hand in 5:03 ? Is it because of the selfie stick?

    • @Aidan Pryde oh ,thanks

    • hi

    • This seems like a newer version turbine I have seen videos of people stuck on a full turbine and there was no emergency exits on it and they have died

  • Gone are the days of men will balls like Fred Dibnah. I Must admit having done absailing myself that would have been quite nerve racking.

  • Stepping off the edge is the scary part of any abseil. Once you get your legs free and you can still feel you have weigh, especially around where the ropes fasten to your harness, it becomes fun. But how I hate those few seconds going over the edge...

  • They need it! Windmill maintenance has the highest death rate out of all the energy sources. More people have died, in the last decade in the UK alone, then all of nuclear energy production in history!

  • Used to work for these guys, the views from the top was one of the best parts of the job.

  • Also emergency pants change when you reach the ground

  • I didnt even make it to the outside shots before I couldn't watch any more, fear of heights x,x

  • Next Episode... NASA: Tom, you want to go on a trip to the ISS? Tom: Only if I can do a space walk.

  • *sweaty palms intensifies*

  • ..and this is why I am not a youtuber :) My heart stopped just watching this.

  • We manufacture these emergency descent systems here in India for a German company, and gets installed in all these wind turbines. It’s got an internal gearing and brake system which works on centripetal force and slows you down if you go faster than a set velocity. Quite clever little mechanism, but has to be made precisely, somebody’s life depends on it. Happy to see this video!

  • You should at least train with it more just because it’s the last resort does not mean it shouldn’t be practiced

  • You don’t train with it often because ideally you shouldn’t need it!? Sorry but that’s a real piss poor excuse for not training on something that could save your life. Buildings have fire drills every 6 months but I can’t even remember the last time I heard of a building needing to actually be evacuated because of a fire.

  • 🤩🤩🤩🤩

  • I wish I could jump too, with the safety equipment of course 😁

  • Sad thing about this is a lot of people will just never realise just how imppossibly hard it is to just step off the top of that and absail down. Respect!!

  • I illegally climb cranes, i dont wanna work construction but this seems cool af

    • I'm good with dirty old blood stained oil. It stays on the ground

  • ooo i wonder how the fans have mysteriously broken themselves today up i gooooo

  • The thumbnail reminded me of the two young engineers that died in a wind turbine fire a few years back :(

  • Lets just say it... Any safety is good stuff

  • that was AWESOME

  • "Look at that view!" *boring brown muddy grass fields below*

  • If only they had an emergency exit for those two engineers who were stuck up a turbine during a fire, where one jumped for it and the other burned.

  • Corona virus didn't work now they are throwing rockets at us

  • 4:13 OH HELL NO!!

  • Wouldn’t get me up there if you welded me to the ladder

  • Interesting video beats sitting in front of a computer screen all day

  • Once again living vicariously through Tom Scott

  • No wind blowing. Thank God for that.

  • Wow, kudos for doing that Tom

  • I'd faint just thinking I gotta go down the outside

  • I'm good with dirty old blood stained oil. It stays on the ground

  • Hailo!

  • Okay, but everything about this is legit so cool

  • Iv seen the video of the fire and i dont think they made it y didnt they have one of these

  • I’m sure they have procedures they are following, but those belay knots scare the crap out of me. You do a double 8 and a safety for absolutely foolproof visual confirmation that a knot is sound.

  • ok yep that is one job that i could never do

  • i find it nice that people ask if you’d like to check out their stuff and you saying yes to it

  • So... what’s the procedure if you’re on the top with no way down and a fire is going on inside the turbine? Well besides jumping to your death.

    • @4:27 It took me a moment to consciously clock that the selfie-stick was edited out, and I presume automatically.

  • I just realised that the thumbnail of this tom scott video uses a red circle!!11! however, it was done wrong! the red circle isn't supposed to actually point something out 😂

  • the thing looks like a side ways ceiling fan on a stand

  • Nice like / dislike ratio!

  • I was up some 16ft ladders, my latest vid baby steps, now I think they were just ant steps, cheese n spice that's high. and a shed load of nopes from me!

  • Damn you have balls out of steel bro 😂 high respect 👍👍

  • O M G not something I would want to do

  • I thought I saw a video of 3 workers who died when they were stuck on a burning wind turbine, so what happened there to the fail-safe safety devices. Going out and over with just those wire holding you, I just wouldn't have to guts and my legs would be like jello.

  • 'I've got two wires on me, I'VE GOT TWO WIRESSS'. ...and pants full of s**t.

  • My stomach was not amused while watching this video

  • are we gonna talk about the 2 googly eyes on tom's hat?

  • Not gonna lie. I dont know if I would be able to do this.

  • I would much rather fall off a six foot ladder than fall wearing a slider (or grabber as we call them in the US). The lanyard attached to your harness stretches several feet before stopping you, and you _will_ be slammed into the steel ladder in the process and left dangling God knows how high off the ground. Hopefully you weren't hurt too bad in the process, b/c now you have to climb all the way back down. This guy is either completely downplaying, or doesn't truly understand, the risk.

  • My dad works at the top of a wind turbine!

  • Only problem with octopus energy is that the octupus symbol just flatout reminds me of Hydra

  • Great to see the insides of one of these! Cheers.

  • @4:27 It took me a moment to consciously clock that the selfie-stick was edited out, and I presume automatically.

  • 200% Mark for Mic 🎤

  • I use Octopus evergy too.

  • 4:52 It's all fun and games until the wind blows you around to the other side into the path of the rotating blades! :-o

  • Amazing video, looks like fun!

  • NOPE

  • Thanks for the cameraman for being creative mode to record the video

  • My god that was so scary I kind of felt the nervousness that Tom felt ngl

  • I thought they have a parachute at top for emergency.

  • Before a single blade hits a bird or bat, their lungs explode from the low pressure created by windmills

  • this is a small turbine compared to the ones in my backyard.

  • Alternative title: "How to Freak Out, While Maintain a Professional Demeanor"

  • *abseiling down the side of a wind turbine. There you go, i fixed the title

  • Looks like a blast! Should open this emergency exit to the public and charge $100 a pop.

  • Emergency exit aint fast enough

  • All i could hear was this: " I have two eyes on me, I have to eyes on me, I am pissing my pants, I have to eyes on me" 😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣

  • Been working in service for wind turbines 10 years now and still unable to do this.

  • waste of money and resources shite

  • I’d like to know how Tom can make his stick holding the camera look invisible.

  • I have anxiety FOR you

  • Wow, all those piles of dead bald eagles from the windmill cancer is hard to stomach.

  • What if it’s for whatever reason falling

  • Why does this video exist? Did the AI suggest it?

  • Tom Scott is like a real-life comic book hero!

  • Someone in Octopus' marketing department is doing a grand job. We all know the reason they offered is publicity for their brand name, but I'm cool with that, and it gave us a good show! Maybe more businesses with interesting facilities should consider offering tours to famous youtubers, as long as it's all honest and legit why not.

  • I mean if you gave me the option between tediously climbing down a ladder or just abseiling I'd always pick the Abseil.

  • Next time go to one of the big ones, with elevator inside. 👍

  • Not going to lie, I got sweaty palms just watching this.

  • Why dont they put ladders on the side?

  • Nope

  • It's funny that this thing has the safety. If you manage to fall from an indoors latter you probably deserve to die 😂

  • Absolutely not

  • Tom: "I've got two wires.. I've got two wires!" Me: "Damn, that's a lot slower than I was hoping for" Also, plot twist: this video is an experiment in how far Tom can push the paid promotions rules.

  • Omg you've got some b@lls going out there! Hats off to you Tom 👏

  • Why did I come here hoping for a zipline?

  • Tora me fotises. Thx

  • I once did a similar thing while mountain climbing a flat mountain thingy, it's actually fun (of course if you aren't scared of heights)

  • am i the only one reminiscent of this guy caught sunbathing up on a wind turbine ?

  • "if your climbing this turbine..." Me:thanks for tips i dont need

  • A little scary I should say. And that's an understatement...

  • One totally unrelated thing that's actually impressing me is the ability of the camera to almost perfectly remove the selfie stick from the recorded image.

  • Those turbines are a joke

  • I think you are brave

  • This piece metal trash that's flying is not worth it.
